For this year’s International Pronouns Day, let’s remember why using pronouns correctly is so important…
Why Pronouns Matter
Pronouns are as important to someone’s identity as their name or sexual orientation.
Pronouns matter most to those who don’t identify with the typical binary pronouns—he/him, she/her—they were assigned at birth. They’re especially important to those just starting to transition and can be extremely gender-affirming.
Normalise Using Pronouns
Make a habit of stating which pronouns you use when introducing yourself.
This eliminates the awkwardness those unfamiliar with gender-diverse people can experience whenever they’re unsure of which pronouns to use when referring to them. It also normalises the practice and encourages others to do the same.
Use Pronouns Respectively
Addressing someone using their correct pronouns is easy, simple and respectful.
Never assume someone’s pronouns. If you are unsure, just ask. It’s that easy and no different to asking about any other aspect of someone’s identity such as their age, nationality or profession.
